Remember that line from the movie The Help…
“You is smart. You is kind. You is important.”
That moment struck a chord with so many of us because it captured a truth we often forget: you matter. You, my friend, are just as important as anyone else in this beautifully chaotic world.
So why do we so often forget to take care of ourselves? For many of us, it stems from upbringing, culture, or a belief that serving others is the highest calling even if it means giving until we are completely spent. I grew up in a Christian home where helping others was encouraged (a wonderful thing), but the unspoken message was that tending to my own needs first was selfish.
Sound familiar?
Clarity Changes Everything
Here’s the thing: clarity changes everything. When we step back and see that constantly giving without replenishing leaves us drained, it becomes clear that self-care is not indulgence, it’s wisdom. As the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” Still true. Still vital.
My responsibility—your responsibility—is to become the best version of ourselves so that we can show up fully for life’s joys, challenges, and opportunities. That requires balance. Balance between giving and receiving, between work and rest, between the expectations of others and the quiet whisper of our own needs. Without it, we end up scattered and resentful instead of purposeful and joyful.
Self-care, or what I like to call self-management, is the foundation for growth. It’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity. And yet, when I ask clients about it, many draw a blank. They’ve lost touch with what lights them up, what restores them, what brings them joy. That forgetting isn’t just sad, it reflects how much we’ve devalued our own worth.
The excuse “I don’t have time” doesn’t hold up. The truth is, we make time for what we believe matters most. When you choose to invest in your well-being, you are saying: My growth matters. My balance matters. My clarity matters.
Clarity Challenge
So here’s my challenge for you:
Part 1: Make three lists.
– What do you love doing right now? (walks, books, movies, new recipes, meditation, tennis, creative projects)
– What did you love doing as a younger you?
– What do you imagine future you might love?
Part 2: Pick one thing and do it.
That’s how clarity is built, one small choice at a time. That’s how balance is restored, by remembering that your needs matter too. That’s how growth begins, by reclaiming joy and making space for the best version of you to emerge.
Because here’s the truth: you are smart, you are kind, you are important. And when you live from that truth, not only do you flourish—you also change the world around you.
